Last Minute dot Com

26th March 2010

Ultimate dubs was looming. I didn't quite know how i was getting there, but we soon sorted out some transport while chatting in the pub the night before.  I was convinced that this year - as I would not be taking a car myself, there would be none of this last minute stuff, no rushing around, just a great chilled weekend.

Steve was taking his new daily mk3 (daily?? yeah right) and also the Pea green Mk1. Myself and greeny had the pleasure of taking the mk1 up to Telford. We’d arranged for Tank to pick me up in the morning, go down to stylehaus, clean the two cars and get going. That was the plan, anyway.

8:30am an hour after i was rudely awaken by the postman, Tank turns up at mine in his mates Mk5 R32, we rolled down to stylehaus. Once opened up, we pulled the mk1 out and got cleaning, the sun was out so we where both begining to buzz about the first show of the season.

Anyway, before we started cleaning we had a little look around the mk3, subtle mods, lovely colour, and... no interior, apart from a fully trimmed dash and headlining. The rest of the interior was on its way down from MJ, freshly trimmed and due at stylehaus for 9:30am. So much for no last minute car building!

Mk1We cracked on with the mk1, and what an easy colour to clean, it comes up mint, and looked rather special on its latest rims, 16” RS’s. In the meantime, Steve had turned up toothbrush in hand and began cleaning the sunroof seals on the mk3, the rest of the trim had arrived and was being fitted by the carbon man along with the carbon details he had made for it. Everything was coming together. The Mk3 was soon together and ready to go - so it was time to get cleaning, while we where doing it we noticed some excess water on the ground, and a hissing sound... yep it was the radiator. Last minute show cars - for the absolute, total win.

Luckily there was a spare mk3 sitting in the corner outside the unit. Steve and Simon decided to strip the Rad from this and fit it to the new mk3... so that meant freshly painted front end off, being carefull not to scratch anything. Thankfully they got it swapped over and front fitted back up without a hitch in under 10 minutes.

Both cars cleaned it was time to go, it was getting on for 2:00pm and Tank still had to stop at Gary B’s on the way to pick up his Awesome R32 powered Mk4.

TributeThe sun was out, we were driving up the M1 in a mint slammed Mk1 on RS’s... Lovely!!! We was finally on our way after what, lets be totally honest, was a really good day.  The last minute rush is all part of the buzz - finally the 2010 show season is here!

After a little pit stop on the hard shoulder of the M6 (where we randomly bumped into Mugly and Orla) we arrived at the show, Due to our lateness most of the cars where already inside and Wayne "One Speed" Russell was already propping up the bar. So after a quick detail of the cars it was time to go and meet up with him and Alice.

In the past we have gone out on the Saturday night, but this year we decided to stay between the two hotel bars, and a good decision it was. We had a chance to catch up with everyone that we havent seen over the winter and met a few new faces, including a couple of guys who had come over from the states. By 4:30am the day was well and truly over and it was time for bed, what a long day!!!

Show time. There is always some quality cars at ultimate dubs, a few new creations like Greg Howells Diesel powered Mk1, Steve Dentons Mk3 and Darren Bennets Mk4 are a couple that stood out for me, another car i was really pleased to see was Lee's AKA INTHEWEEDS silver Mk1 a car that i previously owned in a much more ratty guise. I was really glad to see what he had done with it... fully restored 1978 body, 16v on carbs and fully polished 16" RS’s, Mk1 perfection!!

There was also a lot of familiar cars that had been freshened up over the winter whether it was new wheels, trim or fresh paint, theres always a few cars there to suit most peoples tastes. Aparently there was some nice cars out in the car park but i personally didnt venture that far to check them out.

First show of the year done! All in all a really good weekend... Roll on the next show, hopefully no last minute business next time... Yeah, as if!
