Bit of decent weather meant I could finish off the final undersealing, i'll still need to go back and touch up some areas when the wire tuck studs and smooth bay holes get welded up but for now it'll do. Can't wait to get it back on all 4's and sent off for the paint!

Thanks matey. Just a few new pics of what else I've been up to, actually finished both sides of the front inner wings now so just waiting for a perfect day to paint. They will need to be touched up on the front when it comes back from the smooth bay as the heat from the welded parts will burn the underseal but better too have it protected while I wait. There are a couple of little bits that need touching up with the underseal but will hit those when I do the front arches, but overall very happy! Excuse the orangey pics, it's actually really red in real life!

Not sure why this pic didn't come through but it's one of my favourites.

Quick update, finally finished all of the underside! Bottom side was bare metaled, and corrosion treated, seam sealed then undersealed with Upol Raptor which is a truck bed liner. I'm so impressed with the finish, hopefully it will protect it for years to come. The rear valance is being replaced and the wheel well repaired hence why these bits haven't had any attention yet. Just got to do the arches now!

Well I didn't think it would take as long as it had to get to where I am with the underside, but its not too far off now. Just need to finish the spare wheel well section then it's ready. Will be getting the chassis rails pulled before it gets undercoated. Also bought a new steering rack but haven't got any pictures of it yet.
  6. Saw your car at Edition 38 just gone if I remember right, really cool to read the build thread and actually see the real deal in person. Really impressive work, keep it up!

Bit more scraping progress, floor pans are almost done just need to go over the bottom section with the thinners to get the last of the underseal off. 34 years worth of underbody sealing has held up really well, i'm shocked at the little amount of surface rust on the pans. Even the jacking points look like they are going to clean up well. There are a few dings in the runners underneath so going to try a slide hammer to knock these back into shape. Also bought some DEOX gel for when i've finished with the wire wheels, heard some great things about it so fingers crossed!

Made a start properly underneath, the spit makes things a million times easier. Only downside is doing it outside, but as I don't have a double garage there isn't a great deal I can do. Nothing some big strip lights and a couple of mates can't sort. Bought some Deox gel and some wire wheels ready for the real strip down once the main bulk of the underseal is off. Couple of pics below,

Thanks bud! It's satin aluminium finish enamel engine paint out of a can, there is probably 20+ hours involved in just cleaning up the casing with various wire wheels, air tools etc. It seems to have paid off though, it's a shame that the picture doesn't really capture how nice the finish is. I'll try and get some better shots when it's not got artificial lighting on it. Regarding the solid bushes, I genuinely have no idea if they will make any difference. I've never ran the 02j setup in a mk1 before, but I thought while the box was being done it made sense to put them in now just in case!

Well seeing as I haven't updated for a while I thought i'd bang a couple of pics of the latest happenings. I bought a spit, couldn't stand working on my back with bits of underseal etc so thought it would be a worthwhile investment. Not many pics of this as I've only just built it up but will get some proper ones once I start being able to attack the underside a bit more. With the weather being its usual british winter self, I decided to buy some more bits for the build so that I can crack on as soon as it's back from paint. One of the more important parts of the build was the engine and transmission mounts. I went for the Epytec custom mounts with OE bushes and polyurethane inserts. Should keep the ABF nicely in place without being over the top like some custom solid mounts that I have seen on the market. The driveshafts I was originally planning to build out of the ones on the car, but they are 90mm inner + outer joints. So rather than buying new CV joints, it actually turned out cheaper to buy complete shafts with the correct 100mm joints. Rather than deleting the servo completely, I plan to move it over to the O/S as per the MK2 setup. Losing the brake bar and box setup and having it straight off the pedal should really improve the brake feel. I opted for the common 9" ATE servo and 16v master cylinder. Also picked up some new rack boots as I plan to buy a new rack when more funds become available. What smooth bay wouldn't be complete without the obligatory E36 battery loom and some fresh black wiring conduit piping? Finally moving onto what I have been spending most of my time doing. I had planned on using the factory MK1 020 box but this wouldn't allow me to run that lovely lightened G60 flywheel + VR6 clutch. So I took the 02A DPA gearbox from the donor and started work. The shell was scrapped with the MK3 gearchange cables so I took the liberty of fitting an 02J shift tower from a MK4 including some of Retrofications solid shifter bushes for the cable bracket. Once the transmission brackets have the bushes pressed, I will bolt them to the box. Hopefully now I have the spit and some other bits to be getting on with, there should be some more frequent updates. Thanks for reading.

Not the greatest pic in the world but primered up the arches, made a start on the underside now but no pics as of yet.

For some reason I managed to duplicate one of the pics above and can't edit the post anymore, so here is the pic.

I'll etch primer first then hit it with Upol Gravitex I think, there seems to be plenty of different brands out there such as 3M etc but heard really good stuff about it so going to give it a go.

Weathers been holding off play for a bit but managed to get some real graft down over the last few weekends. Starting with more stripping of the shell, made sense to pull the interior out in case the welding burnt any of the interior. I'm really pleased with how it looks, no hidden horrors! You can just about see the usual spare wheel well corrosion which I have cut out ready for the repair section to be welded in. Some more stripped of the old underseal, I'm completely resealing the shell underneath so the arches were a good start. The horrendous front wings, this is the better of the two. Chopped up then the arch trims bonded using gripfill or similar, bottom corners are rotten anyway. Looking very sorry for itself! N/S wing ready to come off hence the panel gap. The cutting of the old rotten arches ready for new metal, amazing how bad the trims hold water. All of the old underseal off and part way through being taken back. Holes have now gone, needs a bit more tidying up to match the seam but won't be noticeable when under the new underbody sealant anyway. The arch on the other side is now stripped ready for surface prep, hopefully then make a start underneath. Fun

Thanks guys, going to pull the rest of the interior out tonight get it ready for welding. Unfortunately the front wings are too far gone, butchered with a hack saw by Stevie Wonder back in the 90's to fit bigger wheels I imagine
