Started from a shell TakeTwo2

Recommended Posts

Just an update on the engine,

Progress has been lacking lately! As the head needs some work which has set me back.

So its being dropped off on wednesday to have the head stripped, Cleaned, All valves cleaned and polished, New seals and valves guides, pressure tested and skimmed so should be like new when i get it back!

Need to order a complete gasket kit along with new rings etc and get the block and other bits painted up ready for a big fit up over a weekend!

So hopefully ill be back over the next few weeks with an interesting update!

#EnginePrep

Hey guys, thought id tune back in to keep the thread alive!

Updates are slow at the minute as not a lot going on but i dug out the block from the garage and took it to work with me today on the plan to get it ready for some paint!

I should be expecting my rebuilt head back this week sometime so thought id better get cracking!

Heres some pictures of the block after this evenings efforts of jet washing off the block and clearing the waterways before a final serious degreasing and drying off!

Threw down 2 coats of etch primer on the block, Followed by some gloss black!

Pretty please with the results! not bad for a fairly old rusty looking engine block! still waiting on a phone call for my head to be done, just need to sort the list out and get the gaskets and things ordered.

Next on the list is the gearbox and then all the little bits of the engine and brackets.

NoReasonForUpdate#

Summers gone and the winters inbound, So I guess its time to hibernate and carry on from where I left off, engine bits and gaskets etc have been ordered and just waiting for arrival from Germany.

This means that If I get on with things and get the box and brackets painted up to match the block, I could start rebuilding at the end of the month.

But as before I never reach the deadlines lol!

Anyways Guys I hope you boys had a cracking summer and hope you to be joining me again over the next few months as i start getting back into the rhythm of things!

#Gearbox&Brackets

So i'm back and with updates... only a small one for the time being but im here!

I got up and dragged my ass to work this morning, carrying the gearbox and brackets with me,

so this is the box from months ago when i gave it all a good going over

cr0Ab6E.jpg

This morning was easy as i spent so much time before cleaning it up and constantly spraying it with degreaser and brake cleaner, that it only needed a quick going over before masking up!

gearbox masked up ready for the oven....

Same as the block, final degrease, blow over with some really good etch and smash on the black!  easy peasy

Is this enough for ya @jamieprang ;)

I hope you guys enjoy this update and are glad to finally seeing some more pictures and movements! i hope to be back soon with some more bits and bobs being done, I have to admit its been to long and ive got the love bug again!

Time to stop messing around and get this car built!

Until next time my dudes

#Partsupdate!

So Mr Postman arrived this morning! with lots of new bits in a big box!!

gfm0W6M.jpg

rDLs4aA.jpg

Complete rebuild kit in there :) only thing I'm missing is all new bolts but i shall be ordering all new bolts and nuts in stainless as i rebuild the engine so i can measure them etc and order them!

so i guess the next update will be the rebuild process of the engine, something I've never done before but over the watchful eye of my Ol'man I'm sure it'll all be alright in the end!

Stay easy

#BadNewsUpdate

Ok guys! I was hoping I'd be updating tonight with some good news and some pictures but unfortunately it hasn't been my day! so it all started this morning when I totally forgot to order new bolts for the big end and main end! made some phone calls and a friend who worked at VW sorted me out with new ones!  all going well got the crank in and bolted up lovely stuff.......

FftV0UB.jpg

UwfnWne.jpg

Until I saw this!!!!

fQwbEyc.jpg

OOOOOOHHHHHH SHHHIIIIIII************

Bent Rod! how i never see this i don't know! amateur mistake maybe im not sure! but its bent! 1 & 4 are like this.... which leads me onto my next question that im unsure about as I've ordered the bearing kit for my engine stamp! (AUQ) but the bearings aren't the same for the rods! they have like a positioning bit on them like they do on the crankshaft. But my rods and caps are smooth that doesn't allow this location bit?? anyone shed some light ? spoke to a friend of mine and he explained he'd never seen this before....

absolute cockeral of a day!

oooaft... that's a kick in the Niagara falls.

Hmmm... head scratcher.

Have you got any photos of the bearing shells and the positioning bit?

#Projectmovingday

Just tuning in for a small update!

So the day has finally come that I dug the ol'girl out the dusty container and loaded her up to come home!

Quick change over of the wheels in the morning and load up on the truck for a nervous drive home! and then to squeeze it through a fence with mm clearance each side of the wheels :o

y2SZtQm.jpg

Very dusty!

on to the truck we go!

ESnd57G.jpg

Arrival!

Featuring my very good friend ells caddy van! 3Nine7Detailing! if you boys ever need anything give him a shout!

so the plan now is that its home i can start spending some time doing the smaller bits that and actually getting on with it! just made sense bringing it home as dragging it across the works yard every night in the rain and dark wore so thin that i haven't touched it in months!

@jamieprang ordering the rods after christmas if i can't persuade the other half to talk to santa for me

Thats it for now!

back soon

#newpageopened

So i thought id give you guys a quick update and the first of the progress reports now its back home!

Today dragged so hard and I've finally got the motivation to get back on track and start doing bits in the evenings!

This leads onto some bits i got up to tonight!

Roof gutters all fitted with new clips! and then decided to get back on with the wiring now ive started getting my head around the diagrams

Tailgate wiring loom , When i stripped my old shell i came across so many wiring attempts and decided that id cut them about and make them safe whilst deleting any wires that wasn't needed etc, so tonight i stripped all the tailgate loom of the old brittle plastic sheath, took out the wiring i didn't need for the rear wiper, shortened the number plate loom and then all wrapped in tesa tape! nice clean oem updated look!

zOgukpz.jpg

pile of rubbish!

hVWLVie.jpg

Tesa tape! i love this stuff!

eWjZobL.jpg

Nice shaved tailgate harness from numberplate bulbs, heated window to connections in the boot! all neat and tidy!

cGIATqB.jpg

Vr6 tank, wiring spliced into existing loom and wrapped, Like you'd never know!

Excuse the mess but i love flicking on the lights in the garage and seeing this !

bfca5wg.jpg

I know...... its dusty but! i can't wash it until its water tight!

Bit of a pointless update i know but i wanted to let you guys know I'm back and will be around for a while again!

#RearWiringcomplete

Well todays been a rather good day!, Had a phonecall this morning from a guy i bought a screen from to say he had a mk2 golf in the yard for bits! get over here and take what you need!

So off i went with my tools and got some rather good needed stuff as well as some goodies, the main thing i went for was the complete dash loom! i wanted to start with a new one due to mine being so badly altered and dangerous it just wasn't worth the time and effort in repairing it and making safe!

so loom, A complete untouched or written in service booklet along with all the sales brouchers and printouts! chrome trimmed inner door handles! and some other little bits ive been needing since owning a mk2!

so onto the progress report!

Friday evening i got the last of the rear to front wiring sorted and ready for fitting!

 1QRFHvp.jpg

Put all the vacuum lines in and hooked up! vacuum pump installed

This is the locking vacuum pump harness! i just for the life of me remember how it plugs in down the front lol! someone tell me :)  its been a while and of course i didn't take any notice today unplugging stuff

so with that all fitted and all held in place i decided to get the battery relocation main positive in!

JGh4h3d.jpg

Heres where I'm going to put the battery and ill explain why in a second! its just the best place in my opinion as you can run the positive down to the front and tuck it in neatly!

So into the quarter panel and over the inner arch! out into a convenient little hole with a grommet!

OVsZKln.jpg

This allowed me to run it along the sill kick panel tying in with the vacuum pump and all held together by the factory clips!

ICtZvqo.jpg

YES i know it needs a flipping good hoover! it got it lol

FtCyuck.jpg

because I plan on tucking the engine bay wiring, I'm thinking of going through the top grommet in this picture! this will go straight into the chassis leg! correct me if im wrong im sure its that one! i didn't have my hole cutter with me today hence why i didn't go for it <_<

Thats the rear wiring and looms running from the rear fitted

yFnAKrk.jpg

vacuum side and main positive

kCJ79oU.jpg

Vacuum pump loom, tank and rear to front loom fitted!

G6l48xu.jpg

This was a strange feeling laying carpet down! i thought seeing as wiring was complete id put some of it in
