Little Update:

The shell progress is on hold as i'm expecting my child to be born at any min and my full attention will be to that for a while might still get the odd bits done here and there but will definitely finish it some point in the new year, however thought this update below might interest some of you.

Mentioned in the earlier post that i had a set of 5 quite rare NOS 15" 5x100 G60 look steels pretty much exactly the same at G60s but in 5x100 so thought about making them even more rare by converting them to split steels. Could have gone down the banded route but i wont be able to run 15" and 3piece gives me the flexibility of making them wider in the future.

First up was to split the face. only done the one so far as i need to mock it all up and see if it will work.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c25.jpg

All thats needed to split the face is to grind out the 4 bead welds on the back.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c29.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c1e.jpg

As these are brand new pretty much no struggles to remove the face

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c1f.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c20.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c1d.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c18.jpg

I bought some 3piece 4x4 16" wheels not sure what the make is but they're the right sizes 7" fronts 8" rears.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c1c.jpg

Rough idea of what they will look like.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c19.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c16.jpg

Got 2 sets of centre caps also to go with them.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c27.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c15.jpg

These will need modifying

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c26.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c21.jpg

Mocking up the templet which i will CAD up properly then have some rings made up and then welded to the faces. The faces are a little close to the holes but should have a coupe mm shaved off to make some room or have a flush bolt face so you don't see the bolts as the rings act as the fastening plate. not sure but somehow i will get around it.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c24.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c2a.jpg

Idea of the rings.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c37.jpg

And this is potentially what the end result can look like these are 17" and 4x100 but mine will be face mounted.

Impressive build but please don't paint the wheel centers black. It looks mega fugly?

These are the ones that I'd love to do for my MK1.

New Update!

First off managed to cad up a drawing for the rings which i sent to get laser cut, found a company who could do them quite cheap £15 per ring. which have turned out quite well will now have them tig welded on to the faces.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d1e.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d1d.jpg

Bought some doors which had been smoothed which i kinda thought id use but in the end decided to add some handles back in but gone for a different style, let me know what you think, i still have another pair of doors just incase but i do like how these have turned out and something different.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1cd4.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1cd5.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1cd3.jpg

Car is now off the spit and i've put the body panels back on ready to get painted.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d1c.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d22.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d23.jpg

Plugged the side repeaters on the wings.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c3c.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c3a.jpg

Few other little bits done include duck bill splitter,

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c0c.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c05.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c33.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1c32.jpg

Before i painted the bay i added a mk4 bonnet strut pin which i set the height just by eye and bit of guesswork as i didn't have the bonnet on so now that i've mount the bonnet back on i literary welded it just in the right spot little gap to spare.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1cfb.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW_thumb_1d0d.jpg

Next stage is to prep the outside and get it painted and the fun starts then getting close now.

Appreciate all the comments,

Progress is a little slow at the moment but i finally have the shell booked for paint 2nd week of December which i'm looking forward to as i will be helping prep it.

Other final bits i've managed to do is get the front seats runners fabricated to take the TT mounting rails. Test fitted the Momo RS GT seat after i finished mocking up the runner brackets.

The seats are not too bulky and wide so look quite spacious and match the top curve of the scirocco rear seat.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d71.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d70.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d6f.jpg

Photo of the runner bracket i made up as the TT rails are a little wider than the seat runners.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d6e.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d6d.jpg

The other seat has been stripped down had to do a weld repair on the base also plan on repairing the foam

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d5e.jpg

The drivers side door card had sagged on the arm rest from 30 years of use so decided to reinforce the area with fiberglass

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d48.jpg

Plugged the manual window and mirror winder holes.

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d46.jpg

Will hopefully use the electric window wiring off the TT so decided to use the window switch and mirror adjustment, moulded some gloss perspex to house the switches in the speaker pods which i haven't seen done yet, should look slightly hidden

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d75.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d77.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d79.jpg

UNADJUSTEDNONRAW-thumb-1d7a.jpg

I've also booked the seats, door cards, headliner and pillars to be retrimmed beginning of January . The middle section will be done in MK5 GTi Interlagos Tartan/Plaid and the outer section on the seats will be black alcantara, back headliner and pillars, and the door card inserts will also be tartan

The interlagos fabric is quite hard to get hold of now but hopefully the one i've bought turns out to be as described.

few inspiration ideas

Will updated soon on the prep work and other few bits

Update:

While the shell is out of the way and being able to utilise the garage i got chance to start on the suspension bits and engine.

Stripped off the rear diff from the cradle and also pressed in new bearing, sent them off to be sand blasted.
