Tornado red 8v mk2 GTI

Recommended Posts

Hi guys, thought I’d start a build thread to document my progress with my newly acquired GTI.

So I’d been looking for a little while with the search set on either a mk1 or a mk2, after looking at a couple of quite frankly horrific mk2 and being pipped to rather lovely Lhasa green mk1 20vt I was resigned to defeat till I stumble upon what is now my new mk2 8v GTI in Tornado Red on Schpock of all places!

I saw the pictures and knew immediately it was the one so saw it advertised on the Saturday night and picked it up on the Sunday morning...swift!

So the car, it had full vw service history up until 2006 when it was dry stored for 10 years till it was dug out and restored, this was a pretty comprehensive restore as everything underneath appears to be still like new! So, it was then sold to it’s now previous owner in 2016 to only then be dry stored again and only covered 200 miles or so, mainly being taken to be MOT’d by the looks of things. In this 2 year period she was treat to some 15” BBS RS’ which suit it in my opinion.

So then plan, get it running right as, as nice and clean the engine is it’s suffering from poor starting and poo idle but the knock sensor is fubar’d so I’m hoping that’s an easy fix. The headliner although has been previously redone has sagged again so think the wrong glue was used and finally some new  bigger tyres as the currently the 165/45’s fitted to the BBS is a stretch too far...pun intended!

Here’s what your all more interested though...pics!!!

Tyres are now done, now on a 185 and look much better, needless to say drives a hell of a lot nicer too and resealed a leaking split rim whilst I had the tyre off.

Also changed the knock sensor last night as it was shagged and found both feeds to the coil slacker than an old street walker thus sorting my intermittent starting problems and now starts on the button!

Thanks for the comments guys!

Its in the plans to get some 16v rears as I’ve always been an OEM+ kinda guy with my cars, want to get it running spot on first though which brings me onto today’s long day of head scratching.

Think ive traced my poor starting problem to the Fuel pressure regulator leaking fuel into the vac side and tracking fuel up the vac pipe into the throttle body thus bleeding away residual pressure not to mention the pool of fuel I was getting!
